Religion vs. Spirituality

religion vs spirituality

Okay, so I don’t consider myself a ‘religious’ person. I prefer the term ‘spiritual’, which in my personal opinion is as different as the colors red and orange. The other day I was chatting with this dude named Jim, he is a consultant (idk if he likes this term or not) who helps entrepreneurs generate traffic to their websites. He was asking me what type of person I wanted to reach out to and work with. In discussing the perfect prospect for my services, we got into a pretty deep discussion about spirituality and religion and all that good stuff-which left me really thinking about something..

He mentioned that he is pretty religious. I said that I steered away from religion and that I pursued the notion that we are masters of our destiny and that we have the power to choose and create our life in our own design. Although we didn’t see eye to eye when it came to religious or spiritual matters, it REALLY left me wondering about something that felt like a thorn in my mind.

I started thinking about why we search for and believe in religion/spirituality in the first place. Of course I ran through the same ol’ list which was;
*People have a need for connection with a higher power
*We believe that there is a higher power
*We have been conditioned to believe in religion
*It is our culture
*We were born into it
*We like the feeling that ‘something/one’ is watching out for us
*We want to feel a sense of belonging/purpose
*And then there is ‘life after death’, which leads to assurance we will be safe once we leave this earth

One thing that Jim said was, “We all need something to believe in”. This was ringing in my head for days! Because when you really think about it, whether we choose to believe that religion is the way or that spirituality is the way, they are both personal beliefs that WE choose to believe. And they both empower us to become better people!

And Jim is right.

We all do need something to believe in. We may call it religion or spirituality. Essentially, it boils down to one thing; ASSURANCE. We want assurance that we will have a good ‘afterlife’. Assurance that we can create a prosperous life. Assurance that we can live a long healthy life. Assurance that we will be taken care of. Assurance that we will have all we need to succeed. Assurance that we have a life with purpose!

Now I will think twice when I try to compare religious beliefs with non-denominational spiritual beliefs- because although they are different, the desired outcome is the same. ;D
